Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - It mostly does what a spider can
It's hard to dislike a movie that made comic book adaptations cool to the general public again. X-Men raised interest, but it was Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film that really showed people what could be done, both in terms of narrative and special effects. So while I don't dislike the movie, and recognize its importance in opening the floodgates for other superhero flicks, it's still not one that particularly sticks out for me.

I feel Spider-Man is too workman-like. It excels at putting all the pieces together, but it lacks the stylistic touches that Burton brought to Batman, or that Donner did with the old Superman films. The film gets everything right, from the origin story to the crush on Mary Jane. Some liberities were taken with the Goblin and his costume, but I felt they were acceptable for translating the character and getting his part of the story rolling. And yes, the web-slinging sequences are amazing. But mostly, the film just lacked character for me. It impresses because they got it right, but thats only in comparison to the dozens of superhero adaptations where everything was totally wrong. Once I got past the faithfulness to the source material, Raimi didn't seem to put his personal stamp on the film.

There was also way too much of the romantic triangle for me. I think the stuff they had here could've been played out over 2 or even 3 movies, and it comes off feeling very rushed. Considering they rehashed it for the sequel, they really should've slowed things down here.

In all, Spider-Man is a good film. It lacks a certain distinctive quality for me and isn't my prefered superhero film to watch, but I'm glad I own a copy of it. The dvd offers decent picture and sound, and some okay extras. Commentary is boring, and the documentaries focus more on the spider-man mythology than the film's production. Worth grabbing now, or wait till movie 3 is released next year and the en evitable box set.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - You Are The Best Spidy!
I'm a big fan of spider-man before the release of the movie, i have a almost all the comic of spiderman ,i was excited when i heard about the spider-man movie and very happy beacuse Sam Raimi will there direct it, i finally see it and is one of the best movies in 2002, the cast is terrific, Tobey Maguire was a outstanding, kristen Dusnt(she is very beautiful but never as Reese Witherspoon) did a excellent job, William Da Foe another outstanding actor and is a excellent villan, the visuals are Incredible, the New York city looks really really beautiful looks even better in the movie than in the real world, the direction is simply "Perfect",X-men are great too but i prefer spiderman by far, i put 4 stars beacuse Spider-Man 2 was bigger and better than the first spiderman.

Story 10/10
Acting 9/10
Direction 10/10
Visuals 10/10

Overall 10/10

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good movie
This movie is really fun.
I grew up on Spiderman, GI Joe and Heathcliffe and while I don't think I would've been disappointed by this movie if it came out then (although it's not as good as the '89 Batman movie w/ Jack Nicholson, not even close).

The acting was very good.
Even though I think Kirsten Dunst is a big dork for lying to the cops on her Punk'd episode, I think she did very well.

Definitely worth watching, even if you have to see it on TV with commercials.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's worth buying though but most people I know bought it so, hey, give it a shot!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - :0) enjoyable
I just love Spider-Man! It was a great movie I thought! I have it on DVD and I love watching it! Tobey Maguire was great as Peter Parker!
I know at one point Freddie Prinze Jr wanted to play the roll and didn't get it but i really can't picture anybody now other than Toby playing spider man

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Movie
This is a great movie. It has great acting(William Dafoe was the perfect choice for the Green Goblin) Sam Raimi is also a great director and probably one of the few who could take the comic book Spiderman and adapt it to the Big screen. The shots of Spidey swinging through New York are sweet. Overall this is the best superhero franchise so far, although Batman is making a comeback with Batman Begins, after so many lousy superhero movies its refreshing to have a great movie like this.
